What Business Can Learn From the Jeremy Lin Story

Move aside football. New Yorkers and much of the nation are fascinated with a basketball player named Jeremy Lin who went from obscurity to stardom by leading the Knicks to seven straight victories (at the time of this writing). An unknown talent, considered mediocre and lucky to even sit on an NBA bench, stepped in to fill a void when several starters were out with injuries. And, things got Linsane. Now, basketball owns the hearts of New York and nearly no one remembers that this season was almost lost to a contract dispute between players and owners. My experience in consulting with business leaders tells me that there are very important lessons to learn from Lins rise to greatness.

Talent management — the assessment, identification and development of organizational talent — has become a common practice in business, especially in Fortune 500 organizations. The launch of this discipline was driven by intense competition for the best talent as the landscape shifted from a product-based economy to a service-based economy. Lins story underlines the importance of knowing the quality of an organizations talent and finding ways to empower individuals to become breakout stars who can demonstrate their very best. The very same thing happened with the New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz who came out of nowhere to stun the league with his talent, not to mention his dancing ability.

Here are some important messages for business leaders when considering the Jeremy Lin story:

Know Who You Have on Your Bench: It is highly important to spend time identifying the capabilities of the talent you already have in your company. This is the old philosophical axiom lived out: Knowledge is power. When you have an accurate assessment of the capabilities of your people, you can do a much better job of realizing their potential by exploiting their talent for the good of the company and for the benefit of their own career advancement.

Dont Just Focus on Your High Potential Talent: I am saying this as a consultant who has run many High Potential programs for companies. High Potential employees are individuals who currently perform extremely well but also show potential for higher level leadership positions within the organization. These are very important folks to focus on and retain within your organization. Interestingly, Jeremy Lin would not have been placed in this group a month ago. There are plenty of people who may have a ton of potential but, for one reason or another, they are not performing up to the standards which have been set for their role. There may be very specific reasons for this including lack of rewards, wrong job assignment against a skill set, or lack of organizational resource to support success. These individuals are an organizations hidden resource. It is incumbent upon the business to develop a strategy for moving this talent from the back of the bench to the starting lineup.

Give Your People Opportunity: Despite an excellent career in high school and college basketball, no one seemed willing to give Lin a chance at the professional level. For one thing, he was an excellent team player and the tryouts for the draft were more focused on individual performance. Business leaders need to be more willing to take risks with their people. Often, this is the best way to develop employees capability and get them ready for promotion. Stretch assignments not only teach new skills and enable the development of new positive behaviors; they provide motivation to the workforce writ large.

Connect What People Do to the Global Strategy: Lins remarkable situation is more meaningful because of the larger stories of the Knicks struggling season and this past autumns NBA lockout. In companies, we too often fail to tell the big story to our people. This leads to a big disconnect between the overall strategy of the business and the jobs that individuals do. The more employees understand how their roles align to the strategy of the organization, the more motivated they are to outperform expectations. We want our story to be part of a bigger story.

Success is Infectious: It is so much fun to watch the other Knick players take so much delight in the success of their new teammate. It has created a team synergy that has raised the game of all involved. I am tempted to call it team Linergy. A season that appeared lost (there was a good chance that the Knicks would not make the playoffs) has become a season of opportunity. In business, we need to celebrate successes in a way that draws teams together and builds more potential for breakthrough results.

Diversity Rules: Lins race is an underlining story of this phenomenon. Yesterday, when getting an acupuncture session, I heard the all-Chinese staff laughing enthusiastically. They were speaking Chinese so I didnt know what they were so excited about. Then, I heard Jeremy Lins name and I could only imagine the pride and excitement they felt. For many reasons, diversity has become a key strategy for talent management and business success. For one thing, non-traditional pools of talent (meaning, non-white men) provide additional openings to find stars who can raise the game of an organization.

Besides helping his team win games, Lin is good for the business of basketball. Learning from his story could be good for business in general.

Mariners clearto field hardened English striker

Mariners coach Graham Arnold has confirmed the English striker will make his debut at Bluetongue Stadium, having joined the club on loan from Scottish Premier League side Hearts.

Sutton, 28, arrived in Gosford last week but did not receive his clearance in time to play in the Mariners 2-1 defeat against Melbourne Victory last Friday.

And after impressing on the training ground, Arnold will send Sutton into action at the first opportunity in the first-versus-third match.

John will start. We brought him out from Scotland for a reason and thats to play, Arnold said.

Hes looked very good in training, hes fitted in to the squad extremely well and its just a matter of him learning how we play and the players around him learning how he plays.

Smith a rare decorated English manager

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) Bobby McMahon is the lead analyst for FOX Soccer Report, airing nightly at 10:00 pm ET on FOX Soccer Channel.

Stevenage have appointed former Arsenal scout Gary Smith as their new manager, opened the BBCs Jan. 25 report.

The next line of the article noted that Smith had coaching experience with the Colorado Rapids of MLS, but you needed to hang in until one-third of the way through the story before you were told that the Rapids, under Smith, actually won MLS Cup in 2010.

In ranking Smiths time at Arsenal as a scout above managerial experience in Major League Soccer, the news story encapsulates an attitude that is still very prevalent in the United Kingdom and, in particular, England toward MLS.

But if you pause for a moment you quickly realize the absurdity of this kind of condescension – certainly when it comes to English-born managers.

Try this little quiz: Name three living English managers who have won a major senior trophy in one of the top 10 (ranked by UEFA coefficient) league this century?

Harry Redknapps FA Cup victory with Portsmouth in 2008 leaps to mind. Then there is Steve McClaren who won the Eredivisie in 2010 while in charge of FC Twente, and six years before there was his League Cup win with Middlesbrough.

And then . . . and then . . . and then. Yip – I cant think of any others either.

Cast the net further – lets say, the last 20 years – and we can add Brian Little (Aston Villa, League Cup, 1996), Joe Royle (Everton, , FA Cup, 1995), and Ron Atkinson (Aston Villa, League Cup, 1994) while Howard Wilkinson sneaks under the wire with Leeds league title in 1992.

It reinforces the notion that the FAs choices, if they are to replace Fabio Capello with a native son, is limited. Not so much a case of creating a short-list of candidates but never having anything larger than a short list to begin with. If some success and/or longevity are key attributes for any candidate, then the list shrinks rather than expands.

The English game is littered with managers who have been unable to turn some short-term success and media headlines into anything close to punching above their weight: Bruce, Jewell, Warnock, Coppell, Brown, et al.

Alan Pardew came close to winning the 2006 FA Cup with West Ham and has surprised almost everyone with how well he has done with Newcastle this season. But there is nothing within his body of work that point towards England manager material.

Roy Hodgsons claim to fame is that he has managed abroad, has actually managed international sides, and has exceeded expectations when given little to work with. These positives, however, are out-weighted by little in the way of actual success and a traumatic time at Liverpool last season. The English media would surely turn a Hodgson appointment into a feeding frenzy.

Dig into the teams that have made it to the FA Cup 5th round this season and we have Ian Holloway at Blackpool (away to Everton) and Nigel Pearson (away to Norwich). Holloway would offer some mirth and wonderful sound bites, but the FA could get the same by appointing Ricky Gervais. Nigel Pearson – not even Mrs. Pearson would suggest it.

Ironically, there are two other English-born managers still with teams in the FA Cup, and they will face each other this weekend: the aforementioned Gary Smith and Harry Redknapp.

Smith may have been appointed over three weeks ago but his Stevenage Borough side has seen very little action. A 1-0 win over Notts County moved Stevenage into the last 16 of the Cup, and they have yet to concede a goal in their four Cup matches so far.

Smith has hitched to a wagon that is on quite a roll. Stevenage have gained back-to-back promotions, are sitting in the last of the play-off spots in League One and have just one loss in their last 20 all-competition matches. On Tuesday night they went to Sheffield Wednesday and won 1-0 – a surprise, given Wednesdays league position.

Spurs on Sunday will be a more severe test for Smith and his team. But even a gallant loss might be enough to force mention that Gary Smith – in another life – is an English coach who has actually experienced the joy of lifting a major trophy.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 Review: Ralph Lauren’s English remix

For New York Fashion Weeks resident patrician, Ralph Lauren, Downton Abbey-as-inspiration was a natural. As soon as themusic from the TV show started up on the soundtrack, we all knew we were headed for the tweedy English countryside.

All the classics were here — the three-piece suits, jodhpur pants, smoking jackets, silk ascots, pocket squares, top hats and walking sticks — along with somedandy surprises, includingrainbow-hued Fair Isle sweaters that keyed into falls bright color trend, leopard-print coats, argyle socksand jeweled feather brooches, which made the collection fresh and fun.

With the tailored pieces, I liked how Lauren styled different sizes of Prince of Wales and houndstooth checks in one outfit. And thered velvet on a pantsuit was as rich as fine upholstery. Chunky, gold chain necklaces and heels with gold filigree details were nice additions, as were luxe crocodile mini-attache cases and doctors bags.

For evening, theres nothing more chic than the combination of black-and-gold — agold-embroidered, cable-knit cardigan over black pants, for example; a blackbias-cutgown with ropes of crystal beading like jewelry down the back, worn with heels with gold filigree details;or a black-and-goldostrich feather cape.

If only Downton Abbey actually looked this good.

Moonlight Online English Beta Coming Soon

I know this game is being catered to the Twilight Saga fan-girls and fanboys, but I have to come clean and say that Im more interested in Moonlight Online because its like a 3D version of DarkEden Online. DarkEden fans will understand.

Anyways, IGG announced that the Chinese CBT is going well but a lot of English players want in on the action, too. To accommodate non-Mandarin speaking gamers, IGG revealed that they are working on an English translation right now.

The game is currently available to test via a Facebook app. The whole thing, however, is aimed at Chinese gamers for now, so it would be really difficult to get a feel for the game given that you probably wouldnt understand Enter from Exit.

A few of the highlights of Moonlight Online include parkour — yes, you can free-run across buildings and throughout the environment — as well as Soul Clerics for weapons, which enables players to level-up the soul of a weapon and transfer it to other weapons in order to increase stats and abilities. Theres also the three-way open-world PvP with non-targeting combat, between vampires, lycans and humans. I mean, come on, tell me that isnt cool?

Moonlight Online is set for official release before summer of this year. You can read up more on the game or try your hand at the Chinese CBT via the Facebook app by visiting the Official Website.

Obama pitches unfinished business for second term

By Laura MacInnis

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – President Barack Obama sought on Thursday to stoke enthusiasm in California about his 2012 re-election drive, saying he wanted another chance to overhaul immigration and tackle climate change with a second term.

At a series of fundraisers in San Francisco, the Democrat acknowledged he has had a tough first three years in office and asked supporters to summon the energy to mobilize for him again to complete unfinished business on his agenda.

Were going to have to be as focused as we were in 2008, he said, joking that it was not as trendy to support him now as when he first emerged as a presidential candidate, but also noting the economic downturn has dampened spirits.

Weve gone through three tough years and so people want to hope, but theyve been worn down by a lot of hardship, he told 70 people who paid $35,800 (22,656.79 pounds) each to attend a dinner that included a live performance from soul singer Al Green.

He said his second-term to-do list included making sure health care and Wall Street reforms were fully implemented, continuing to bolster education and scientific research, and advancing US oil, gas and clean energy production.

He also pitched items of interest but left unattended in his first term, including addressing the large numbers of undocumented workers in the United States and facing down global warming.

Weve still got to get immigration reform done, because we are a nation of immigrants and we are a nation of laws, he said, adding: Were going to deal with climate change in a serious way.

And were going to have to figure out how to pay for all this stuff, Obama said, saying that wealthier Americans – like him and like them, in his words – can do a little bit more to make sure that kid around the corner has a chance like we did.

Supreme Court Upholds Use Of Arbitration In CROA Lawsuits

The US Supreme Court has handed credit counseling agencies a
major victory. By an 8-1 vote, on January 10, 2012, the Court ruled
that lawsuits brought under the federal Credit Repair Organizations
Act (CROA) can be subject to mandatory arbitration.

This is a profoundly significant decision with far-reaching
positive implications for counseling agencies and others in the
consumer financial services sector that in recent years have been
the target of aggressive plaintiffs lawyers. Providers of
consumer financial services can use this pro-arbitration ruling to
help mitigate the threat of consumer class action lawsuits by using
carefully drafted contract language….
